Ziyarat Imam Hussain - Eve of Eid

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ آدَمَ صَفْوَةِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya waritha adama safwati allahi

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Adam the choice of Allah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ نُوحٍ امِينِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya waritha nuhin amini allahi

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Noah the trustee of Allah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya waritha ibrahima khalili allahi

Peace be upon you O inheritor of Abraham the Friend of Allah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ مُوسَىٰ كَلِيمِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya waritha musa kalimi allahi

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Moses the spoken by Allah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ عِيسَىٰ رُوحِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya waritha `isa ruhi allahi

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Jesus the spirit of Allah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ مُحَمَّدٍ

alssalamu `alayka ya waritha muhammadin

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Muhammad,

صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ حَبِيبِ ٱللَّهِ

salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi habibi allahi

blessings of Allah be upon him and his Household, the most-beloved of Allah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ عَلِيٍّ حُجَّةِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya waritha `aliyyin hujjati allahi

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of `Ali the Argument of Allah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ ايُّهَا ٱلْوَصِيُّ ٱلْبَرُّ ٱلْتَّقِيُّ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha alwasiyyu albarru alttqiyyu

Peace be upon you, O obedient and pious successor.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ثَارَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ ثَارِهِ وَٱلْوِتْرَ ٱلْمَوْتُورَ

alssalamu `alayka ya thara allahi wabna tharihi walwitra almawtura

Peace be upon you, O vengeance of Allah, son of His vengeance, and the unavenged so far.

اشْهَدُ انَّكَ قَدْ اقَمْتَ ٱلصَّلاَةَ

ashhadu annaka qad aqamta alssalata

I bear witness that you performed the prayers,

وَآتَيْتَ ٱلزَّكَاةَ

wa atayta alzzakata

defrayed the poor-rate,

وَامَرْتَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

wa amarta bilma`rufi

enjoined the right,

وَنَهَيْتَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنْكَرِ

wa nahayta `an almunkari

forbade the evil,

وَجَاهَدْتَ فِي ٱللَّهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِ

wa jahadta fi allahi haqqa jihadihi

and strove for the sake of Allah as exactly as strife must be

حَتَّىٰ ٱسْتُبيحَ حَرَمُكَ وَقُتِلْتَ مَظْلُوماً

hatta istubiha haramuka wa qutilta mazluman

until your inviolability was violated and you were slain wrongfully.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya aba `abdillahi

Peace be upon you, O Aba-`Abdullah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka yabna rasuli allahi

Peace be upon you, O son of Allah’s Messenger.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ سَيِّدِ ٱلْوَصِيِّينَ

alssalamu `alayka yabna sayyidi alwasiyyina

Peace be upon you, O son of the chief of the prophets’ successors.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ فَاطِمَةَ ٱلزَّهْرَاءِ

alssalamu `alayka yabna fatimata alzzahra'i

Peace be upon you, O son of Fatimah the luminous lady

سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاءِ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ

sayyidati nisa'i al`alamina

and the doyenne of the women of the worlds.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بَطَلَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

alssalamu `alayka ya batala almuslimina

Peace be upon you, O hero of Muslims.

يَا مَوْلاَيَ

ya mawlaya

O my master,

اشْهَدُ انَّكَ كُنْتَ نُوراً فِي ٱلاصْلاَبِ ٱلشَّامِخَةِ

ashhadu annaka kunta nuran fi al-aslabi alshshamikhati

I bear witness that You were light in the lofty loins

وَٱلارْحَامِ ٱلْمُطَهَّرَةِ

wal-arhami almutahharati

and purified wombs.

لَمْ تُنَجِّسْكَ ٱلْجَاهِلِيَّةُ بِانْجَاسِهَا

lam tunajjiska aljahiliyyatu bi'anjasiha

The ignorance could not stain you with its impurities

وَلَمْ تُلْبِسْكَ مِنْ مُدْلَهِمَّاتِ ثِيَابِهَا

wa lam tulbiska min mudlahimmati thiyabiha

or dress you its gloomy garbs.

وَاشْهَدُ انَّكَ مِنْ دَعَائِمِ ٱلدِّينِ

wa ashhadu annaka min da`a'imi alddini

I also bear witness that you are one of the pillars of the religion,

وَارْكَانِ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

wa arkani almuslimina

the supports of Muslims,

وَمَعْقِلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

wa ma`qili almu'minina

and the havens of the faithful believers.

وَاشْهَدُ انَّكَ ٱلإِمَامُ ٱلْبَرُّ ٱلتَّقِيُّ ٱلرَّضِيُّ

wa ashhadu annaka al-imamu albarru alttqiyyu alrrdiyyu

I also bear witness that you are the God-fearing, pious, pleased,

ٱلزَّكِيُّ ٱلْهَادِي ٱلْمَهْدِيُّ

alzzakiyyu alhadi almahdiyyu

pure, guide, and well-guided Imam.

وَاشْهَدُ انَّ ٱلائِمَّةَ مِنْ وُلْدِكَ

wa ashhadu anna al-a'immata min wuldika

I also bear witness that the Imams from your progeny

كَلِمَةُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَاعْلاَمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰ

kalimatu alttaqwa wa a`lamu alhuda

are the spokesmen of piety, the signs of guidance,

وَٱلْعُروَةُ ٱلْوُثْقَىٰ

wal`urwatu alwuthqa

the firmest handle (of Islam),

وَٱلْحُجَّةُ عَلَىٰ اهْلِ ٱلدُّنْيَا

walhujjatu `ala ahli alddunya

and the arguments against the inhabitants of this world.

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji`una

To Allah we belong and to Him is our return.

يَا مَوْلاَيَ انَا مُوَالٍ لِوَلِيِّكُمْ

ya mawlaya ana muwalin liwaliyyikum

O my master, I am loyal to your loyalists

وَمُعَادٍ لِعَدُوِّكُمْ

wa mu`adin li`aduwwikum

and enemy of your enemies.

وَانَا بِكُمْ مُؤْمِنٌ وَبِإِيَابِكُمْ

wa ana bikum mu'minun wa bi'iyabikum

I also believe in you all and in your Return

مُوقِنٌ بِشَرَايعِ دِينِي

muqinun bisharayi`i dini

and I have full confidence in the laws of my religion

وَخَوَاتيمِ عَمَلِي

wa khawatimi `amali

and in the seals of my deeds.

وَقَلْبِي لِقَلْبِكُمْ سِلْمٌ

wa qalbi liqalbikum silmun

My heart is at peace with your heart

وَامْرِي لاِمْرِكُمْ مُتَّبِعٌ

wa amri li'amrikum muttabi`un

and all my affairs are following your commands.

يَا مَوْلاَيَ اتَيْتُكَ خَائِفاً فَآمِنِّي

ya mawlaya ataytuka kha'ifan fa'aminni

O my master, I have come to you fearful; so, (please) secure me.

وَاتَيْتُكَ مُسْتَجِيراً فَاجِرْنِي

wa ataytuka mustajiran fa'ajirni

I have come to you seeking shelter; so, (please) grant me shelter.

وَاتَيْتُكَ فَقِيراً فَاغْنِنِي

wa ataytuka faqiran fa'aghnini

I have come to you deprived; so, (please) grant me wealth.

سَيِّدِي وَمَوْلاَيَ

sayyidi wa mawlaya

My chief and master,

انْتَ مَوْلاَيَ حُجَّةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَىٰ ٱلْخَلْقِ اجْمَعِينَ

anta mawlaya hujjatu allahi `ala alkhalqi ajma`ina

you are, O my master, Allah’s argument against all of His creatures.

آمَنْتُ بِسِرِّكُمْ وَعَلاَنِيَتِكُمْ

amantu bisirrikum wa `alaniyatikum

I believe in your secret and open affairs,

وَبِظَاهِرِكُمْ وَبَاطِنِكُمْ

wa bizahirikum wa batinikum

in your visible and invisible affairs,

وَاوَّلِكُمْ وَآخِرِكُمْ

wa awwalikum wa akhirikum

and in the foremost and the last of you.

وَاشْهَدُ انَّكَ ٱلتَّالِي لِكِتَابِ ٱللَّهِ وَامينُ ٱللَّهِ

wa ashhadu annaka alttali likitabi allahi wa aminu allahi

I also bear witness that you have recited the Book of Allah and you are the Trustee of Allah,

ٱلدَّاعِي إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ بِٱلْحِكْمَةِ وَٱلْمَوْعِظَةِ ٱلْحَسَنَةِ

aldda`i ila allahi bilhikmati walmaw`izati alhasanati

who calls to Allah with wisdom and excellent exhortation.

لَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ امَّةً ظَلَمَتْكَ

la`ana allahu ummatan zalamatka

May Allah curse the people who wronged you.

وَلَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ امَّةً سَمِعَتْ بِذٰلِكَ فَرَضِيَتْ بِهِ

wa la`ana allahu ummatan sami`at bidhalika faradiyat bihi

May Allah curse the people who were pleased when they heard of that.

You may then turn to `Ali ibn al-Husayn (`a), who is buried to the side of Imam al-Husayn’s feet, and say the following words:

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya waliyya allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s intimate servant.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka yabna rasuli allahi

Peace be upon you, O son of Allah’s Messenger.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ خَاتَمِ ٱلنَّبِيِّينَ

alssalamu `alayka yabna khatami alnnabiyyina

Peace be upon you, O son of the seal of the prophets.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ فَاطِمَةَ

alssalamu `alayka yabna fatimata

Peace be upon you, O son of Fatimah

سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاءِ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ

sayyidati nisa'i al`alamina

the doyenne of the women of the worlds.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ امِيرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

alssalamu `alayka yabna amiri almu'minina

Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ ايُّهَا ٱلْمَظْلُومُ ٱلشَّهِيدُ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha almazlumu alshshahidu

Peace be upon you, O persecuted and martyred.

بِابِي انْتَ وَامِّي

bi'abi anta wa ummi

May Allah accept my father and my mother as ransoms for you.

عِشْتَ سَعيداً

`ishta sa`idan

You lived happily

وَقُتِلْتَ مَظْلُوماً شَهيداً

wa qutilta mazluman shahidan

and were killed as wronged and martyred.

You may then turn to the tombs of the martyrs—may Allah’s pleasure be upon them—and say the following

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ ايُّهَا ٱلذَّابُّونَ عَنْ تَوْحِيدِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alaykum ayyuha aldhdhabbuna `an tawhidi allahi

Peace be upon you all, O defenders of (the faith of) Allah’s Oneness.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ بِمَا صَبَرْتُمْ

alssalamu `alaykum bima sabartum

Peace be upon you because you were constant.

فَنِعْمَ عُقْبَىٰ ٱلدَارِ

fani`ma `uqba alddari

How excellent then the issue of the abode is.

بِابي انْتُمْ وَامِّي

bi'abi antum wa ummi

May Allah accept my father and my mother as ransoms for you.

فُزْتُمْ فَوْزاً عَظيماً

fuztum fawzan `aziman

You achieved a great success.

You may then walk to the shrine of al-`Abbas ibn `Ali, stop at his holy tomb, and say the following words:

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ ايُّهَا ٱلْعَبْدُ ٱلصَّالِحُ وَٱلصِّدِّيقُ ٱلْمُوَاسِي

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha al`abdu alssalihu walssiddiqu almuwasi

Peace be upon you, O righteous servant (of Allah) and veracious self-sacrificing.

اشْهَدُ انَّكَ آمَنْتَ بِٱللَّهِ

ashhadu annaka amanta billahi

I bear witness that you believed in Allah,

وَنَصَرْتَ ٱبْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ

wa nasarta ibna rasuli allahi

supported the son of Allah’s Messenger,

وَدَعَوْتَ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ

wa da`awta ila sabili allahi

called to the way of Allah,

وَوَاسَيْتَ بِنَفْسِكَ

wa wasayta binafsika

and sacrificed yourself for Him.

فَعَلَيْكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ افْضَلُ ٱلتَّحِيَّةِ وَٱلسَّلاَمِ

fa`alayka min allahi afdalu alttahiyyati walssalami

So, the most favorite greetings and compliments of Allah be upon you.

You may now throw yourself on the tomb and say the following words:

بِابِي انْتَ وَامِّي يَا نَاصِرَ دِينِ ٱللَّهِ

bi'abi anta wa ummi ya nasira dini allahi

May Allah accept my father and mother as ransoms for you, O supporter of Allah’s religion.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نَاصِرَ ٱلْحُسَيْنِ ٱلصِّدِّيقِ

alssalamu `alayka ya nasira alhusayni alssiddiqi

Peace be upon you, O supporter of al-Husayn the veracious.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نَاصِرَ ٱلْحُسَيْنِ ٱلشَّهِيدِ

alssalamu `alayka ya nasira alhusayni alshshahidi

Peace be upon you, O supporter of al-Husayn the martyr.

عَلَيْكَ مِنِّي ٱلسَّلاَمُ

`alayka minni alssalamu

Peace from me be upon you

مَا بَقِيتُ وَبَقِيَ ٱللَّيْلُ وَٱلنَّهَارُ

ma baqitu wa baqiya allaylu walnnaharu

as long as I am existent and as long as there are day and night.

You may then stand up to offer a two-unit prayer to the side of his head and then repeat the same words that you have said after offering a prayer at Imam al-Husayn’s shrine. These words, which have been previously cited, begin with the following statement: allahumma inni laka sallaytu
wa laka raka`tu wa laka sajadtu…

If you intend to leave and bid farewell to the Imam (`a), you may stop at the side of the head and say the following words while weeping:

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مَوْلاَيَ

alssalamu `alayka ya mawlaya

Peace be upon you, O my master.

سَلاَمَ مُوَدِّعٍ لاََ قَالٍ وَلاَ سَئِمٍ

salama muwaddi`in la qalin wa la sa'imin

This is the greeting of one who has to bid you farewell although he is neither bored with you nor tired of you.

فَإِنْ انْصَرِفْ فَلاَ عَنْ مَلاَلَةٍ

fa'in ansarif fala `an malalatin

If I leave (you), this is not because of weariness,

وَإِنْ اقِمْ فَلاَ عَنْ سُوءِ ظَنٍّ

wa in uqim fala `an su'i zannin

and if I reside, this is not because of mistrusting

بِمَا وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّابِرِينَ

bima wa`ada allahu alssabirina

the promise that Allah has made for the serene ones.

يَا مَوْلاَيَ لاََ جَعَلَهُ ٱللَّهُ آخِرَ ٱلْعَهْدِ مِنِّي لِزِيَارَتِكَ

ya mawlaya la ja`alahu allahu akhira al`ahdi minni liziyaratika

O my master, may Allah not decide this time of my visit to you to be the last

وَرَزَقَنِيَ ٱلْعَوْدَ إِلَيْكَ

wa razaqani al`awda ilayka

and may He endue me with more chances to re-visit you,

وَٱلْمَقَامَ فِي حَرَمِكَ

walmaqama fi haramika

to reside in your sanctuary,

وَٱلْكَوْنَ فِي مَشْهَدِكَ

walkawna fi mashhadika

and to be in your presence.

آمِينَ رَبَّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ

amina rabba al`alamina

Respond to me, O Lord of the worlds!

You may then kiss the tomb and try to pass your entire body over it, because this tomb is security and protection. You may then leave it by walking backwards without giving your back to the tomb. You may say the following words:

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بَابَ ٱلْمَقَامِ

alssalamu `alayka ya baba almaqami

Peace be upon you, O door to the High Position.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا شَرِيكَ ٱلْقُرْآنِ

alssalamu `alayka ya sharika alqur'ani

Peace be upon you, O partner of the Quran.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حُجَّةَ ٱلْخِصَامِ

alssalamu `alayka ya hujjata alkhisami

Peace be upon you, O argument against disputants.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سَفِينَةَ ٱلنَّجَاةِ

alssalamu `alayka ya safinata alnnajati

Peace be upon you, O ark of salvation.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا مَلاَئِكَةَ رَبِّي

alssalamu `alaykum ya mala'ikata rabbi

Peace be upon you all, O angels of my Lord

ٱلْمُقِيمِينَ فِي هٰذَا ٱلْحَرَمِ

almuqimina fi hadha alharami

who are residing in this sanctuary.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ ابَداً

alssalamu `alayka abadan

Peace be upon you forever

مَا بَقِيتُ وَبَقِيَ ٱللَّيْلُ وَٱلنَّهَارُ

ma baqitu wa baqiya allaylu walnnaharu

as long as I am existent and as long as there are day and night.

You may also say the following words:

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji`una

To Allah we belong and to Him is our return.

وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَلِيِّ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billahi al`aliyyi al`azimi

There is neither might nor power except with Allah the All-high and All-great.

You may then leave. Sayyid Ibn Tawus and Muhammad ibn al-Mashhadi said, “If you do all these devotional acts (correctly), you will be as if you have visited Almighty Allah in His Divine Throne.”

You may also say the following words:

You may then leave. Sayyid Ibn Tawus and Muhammad ibn al-Mashhadi said, “If you do all these devotional acts (correctly), you will be as if you have visited Almighty Allah in His Divine Throne.”

You may then offer a two-unit prayer and when you finish, you may say the following words:
